Premature graying of hair largely affects individuals aged between 20 and 30 years. It’s often caused by stress, poor nutrition, thyroid disorders, hormonal fluctuations, sinusitis, genetic predisposition, and chronic colds.

The hair derives its color from melanin, and hence it will become gray or white when melanin levels are reduced. In fact, the body gradually stops the production of melanin as you age.

Fortunately, there are several natural ways to solve the problem of graying hair, and some of the best ways are highlighted below:

1.Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry, or Amla, is very effective against hair loss, dull hair, as well as premature graying. It has strong anti-aging effects, thanks to its abundance in antioxidants and vitamin C.

Boil some dried Indian gooseberries or amla powder in coconut oil. Allow it to cool before applying it on your hair and scalp. Leave it overnight and then wash you hair. Do this twice a week. Alternatively, you can mix a tablespoon of alma pulp with a tablespoon of lemon juice. Massage your scalp with the mixture before bedtime, and wash it in the morning.

2.Curry Leaves

Mixed with coconut oil, curry leaves can help enhance your hair’s pigmentation. In a pan, pour a tablespoon of coconut oil before adding some fresh curry leaves. Boil them till they get charred. Afterwards, stir and apply it on your hair. Give it 30-45 minutes before rinsing it off. Do this twice a week.


Besides strengthening the lustrous locks, henna also darkens the hair. Prepare a paste from ground henna leaves, a tablespoon of coffee powder, some plain yogurt, and 3 tablespoons of Indian gooseberry powder. Apply this paste on your hair and allow it to dry. Rinse normally and repeat 1-2 times a month.

Alternatively, you can mix henna powder with some hot black coffee, so as to get a yogurt-like consistency. Leave it covered for a few hours before applying it on your hair. After application, leave it for around 3 hours before washing it off with a shampoo.

4.Lemon Juice and Coconut Oil

Besides stimulating hair growth, fighting infections, and moisturizing it, coconut oil also effectively reverses the gray hair, thanks to its high antioxidant content. Mix 3 tablespoons of lemon juice with some coconut oil. Apply the mixture to the hair and massage your scalp. Give it an hour to act before washing it off with a shampoo. Do this once a week.

5.Sage and Rosemary

Add half a cup each of dry leaves of Sage and Rosemary, in a pot with 2 cups of water. Then, boil them and leave them to stand for a couple of hours.

Afterwards, strain the liquid and use it to rinse your hair after shampooing. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before washing it off. This should be done once a week.

6.Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap Molasses produces a pigment that effectively reduces gray hair. Its consumption will provide 14% of copper’s recommended daily dosage, plus high amounts of magnesium, selenium, and iron. Thus, you’re advised to take a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses each morning for a couple of months.

7.Onion Juice

Experts attribute graying of hair to the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide at the hair follicle bases, and onion juice promotes the production of catalase.

Hence, you need to massage your scalp with onion juice. Give it 30 minutes to act before rinsing. Do this everyday for some weeks.

8.Black tea

It not only darkens the hair, but also softens it. Add 2 tablespoons of the tea to a cup of water and boil them. Add salt and allow it to cool. Wash you hair with the tea and allow it to act for about 20 minutes.

Then, use cold water to wash it off. Don’t use a shampoo. This should be done 1-2 times a week.

9. Amaranth

Besides restoring natural hair color, amaranth also prevents graying and combats hair loss. After washing your hair, apply fresh juice extracted from amaranth leaves on your hair and scalp.Then, rinse it with water.

10. Black Sesame Seeds

They boost production of melanin by supporting melanocyte activity, and hence very efficient in treating premature graying of hair. They also minimize gray hairs, thanks to their abundance in phosphorous, copper, iron, protein, and magnesium. Take a teaspoon of black sesame seeds every day for 3 months.

Using any of these home remedies on a regular basis will definitely solve the problem of premature graying of hair.
